Under 11s Tournament
The Young Dragon's Season came to an end at the Norwich City Hockey Club Tournament on Sunday 9th May with an Under 11 Boys Team of Marcus, Ollie, Adam, Connor, Stanley & Sam and Goalkeeping support from Fred and Greg of Norwich City HC.
The first game against Pelicans B was a great game for Dragons, which took the coaching team of Mike, H & Butts by complete surprise with some excellent passing, defending and a superb team spirit. Thanks to the defensive teamwork of Marcus and Ollie with Fred in goal, the Pelicans couldn't convert some good attacks into any goals. Marcus did a great job stepping into the tackle and Ollie held superb space in the D to sweep up anything that managed to get through. Dragons had some great possession of their own with Adam, Stanley, Connor and Sam putting together several great passes and stick skills to mount a number of promising attacks. As neither side was able to convert their chances, the final score of 0-0 reflected a well-balanced game and gave the team and Dragons Supporters a real buzz. Man of the Match was a joint award for Marcus, Ollie & Fred.
Unfortunately, with a break of a few games, that momentum was lost in the next match and facing a strong Norwich City A team who finished second in the group, Dragons lost 6-0. Sadly Fred, now playing for his home team (Norwich City A) didn't have much to do, instead Greg (of Norwich City B) played in goal for us and was kept extremely busy! To be fair to Greg and the defence, the goals scored by City were very good and often found the corners. Man of the Match for this game was Connor who managed to break up the City play on several occasions and was superb helping out his defence, as well as getting out wide for free hits.
Without time to re-group and receive words of wisdom from the coaching team, the Dragons had to stay on the pitch for their next game against eventual group winners Watton. By this time the boys had worked very hard and Watton
managed to score 3 goals with no reply from the Dragons. Fred was back in goal and pulled off some great saves, but Watton managed to fill the Dragons D with players. Adam managed to make a superb goal-line clearance and also made a great break through all the Watton players only to be prevented from scoring by the Watton keeper. Man of the Match for this game was Adam.
Dragons finished the Group Games in 4th place on goal difference and so into a playoff with Norwich City B who finished 4th in the other Group. In this match the Dragons worked hard again and kept a clean sheet for much of the game and when the ball was pushed out of defence 'birthday boy' Stanley and Sam managed some good linkup play, however, we still couldn't trouble their keeper and a late goal from Watton sealed their victory. Sam took a nasty knock on the knee but put on a brave face to finish the game. Joint Man of the Match for this game were Sam and Stanley.
Sam was proud to collect the certificate for the Team at the Awards Ceremony at the end of the Tournament.
Overall the team spirit was excellent, everyone was positive towards each other and enjoyed themselves which was great to see, the players also showed their appreciation to Fred and Greg for their excellent help on the day, I think Fred in particular enjoyed all the action he saw in his three games for us and was shouting "Come on Dragons" in the first game!!
Special mention to parents, sisters, cousins and any other family members for cheering the boys on and to the coaching team on the day of Mike, Hazel and Butts. The tournament showed us a few areas to work on during training to finetune our play, however after seeing the way the team performed in the first game, we have high hopes for next season!!
WELL DONE BOYS!!!!!

Norwich Dragons Mens 1st team repeated the feat achieved by the club's ladies first team two weeks earlier by winning their last league game and there-by their league.
Norwich travelled to Ipswich knowing that a win would seal the league title for them, promotion to Division 2N being secured a few weeks previously. Dragons dominated the game, scoring early, restricting Ipswich to little attacking play and reaching a comfortable 0-4 score at halftime. In the second half Dragons turned on the pressure, scoring a further 10 goals, though conceeding a late penalty corner to Ipswich to make the score 1-14 in Dragons favour. Scorers were Bunting (4), Snelling (4), Bell (3), Gould, Knights and Wagstaff.
The 2009-2010 season has been a season of hard work on and off the pitch for Norwich Dragons and the club has sought to build for the future, following its creation through merger of the Norwich Union mens and ladies clubs after the closure of Pinebanks. Off the pitch the club has started and grown it's junior section and gained ClubsFirst accreditation from England Hockey showing it is working towards as safe, effective and child friendly hockey environment. The club has also held many fund raising events as it seeks to raise funds for a new pitch that is to be built on the Hewitt school site. On the pitch both mens and ladies 1st teams have won their leagues. The club would like to thank the many people who have helped out over the season as well as those who have umpired and coached for them.
A Tribute
Norwich Dragons Hockey Club are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of one of their club members, Becky Thorpe.
Becky joined the Dragons earlier this season, following the disbandment of her previous club, Denver. She played for the Club as regularly as she could. She always played with great enthusiasm and with an undoubted passion for the game she loved, and which she naturally excelled in.
She will be sadly missed by all at Norwich Dragons and Denver Hockey Clubs, as well as all in the wider Hockey community.
Our most sincere thoughts go out to her family and friends at this difficult time.

Dragon's School Hockey Sessions Roaring Success
Norwich Dragons Hockey Club members Mike Banham and Hazel Medler provided hockey coaching sessions for over 100 Norwich school children last term and aim to continue through the remainder of this school year. Using England Hockey's 'Quicksticks' hockey sets supplied by the Norwich School Sport Partnership, children in Year 5 at Cavell and Lakenham Primary Schools have already benefited from the free sessions, with Bignold Primary being added to the programme this term.
The coaches and teachers, as well as the children, enjoy the sessions which provide the youngsters with an opportunity to experience hockey, in many cases, for the first time. After the 8 week programme at the school the children have the option to continue receiving coaching through the Young Dragons sessions at Lionwood School, run by other volunteers from Norwich Dragons Hockey Club. It is also hoped that the experience gained by the teachers will enable them to continue to offer hockey as a sporting option for the youngsters at school.
Commenting on the Programme, Mike Hardy, President of Norwich Dragons Hockey Club said, "The work that Mike and Hazel are doing is a superb example of the enthusiasm the Club has for growing the Olympic sport of hockey in the Norwich area. With a new Hockey Centre proposed for the Hewett School site later in 2010, we aim to bring hockey to many more members of the community in the lead up to 2012. Through the work with the schools as well as the Young Dragons sessions we hope several youngsters will be inspired to take up the game and perhaps we will find a future Olympian amongst them!".
Further details of the school sessions are available from Hazel Medler at hazelmedler@btinternet.com or for the Young Dragons coaching sessions contact Natalie Beal at nat_beal@hotmail.com or visit the websitewww.norwichdragonshc.co.uk.
Norwich Dragons Hockey Club achieves ClubsFirst Accreditation
It is with great pleasure that we can announce on 3rd February 2010, England Hockey confirmed our ClubsFirst accreditation in recognition of the work we are doing to create a safe, effective and child friendly hockey environment. This makes us one of just 6 Clubs in Norfolk and 24 in the East Region that have gained such accreditation and puts us firmly into the spotlight with Sport England and England Hockey. A big thank you to everyone that played their part in making this happen, especially Mike Hardy, without whom none of this would have happened.
The Club's policies, codes of conduct and procedures that support the accreditation can be found on the Club Policies page of the website.
One of the key points to remember is that any concerns or issues relating to safeguarding and protecting young people should be referred immediately to Natalie Beal (Club Welfare Officer), Angela Murgatroyd (Deputy Club Welfare Officer) or Hazel Medler (Club Development Officer), all of whom have been trained to deal with such matters.

NDHC Men's 1s are Champions!

Adam managed to make a superb goal-line clearance and also made a great break through all the Watton players only to be prevented from scoring by the Watton keeper.
| Norwich Dragons Hockey Club are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of one of their club members, Becky Thorpe. |
